Sleeping under the stars is a quintessential family vacation, but for me camping with my kids feels like just as much work as being at home, with the addition of bad sleep, zero privacy and biting insects. But my kids love camping, so much so that after three years of sending them to the great outdoors with their dad (and opting out of camping myself), I agreed to join their annual trip to Forillon National Park in Gaspé, Que.

At 89 years old, B.C.-based Joy Fox is still doing the kind of travel — independent, adventurous — that “makes her heart beat faster.” This includes road tripping around New Zealand, celebrating her 84th birthday watching the Northern Lights in Norway, and snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef. Fox is a member of the 100,000 reader-strong JourneyWoman, a Toronto-based solo travel website and resource for women over 50, established by the late Evelyn Hannon, a beloved, trail-blazing travel writer.

Enjoying Grown Up Experiences on Magnetic HillMagnetic Hill is named after a weird natural phenomenon where it feels as if your car rolls uphill of its own volition. The hill is home to the city’s water park and zoo, so if you ever visited the city as a kid this is probably where you ended up. At the top of the hill are two newer attractions that are strictly for the grown-ups.
