Gleaning. It may not be part of everyone’s vocabulary these days, but it’s been around for a very long time. It was mentioned in the Bible, when God told the Israelites to always leave something for people in need to gather after a harvest, and there’s a famous painting by Jean François Millet that shows gleaning was going on in mid-19th century France.

One of the brightest events of the holiday season is now on view at San Diego Botanic Garden (SDBG). It’s their third annual Lightscape, a mile-long display of extravagantly illuminated installations that turn the always lovely, mostly green garden into a multicolored, magical wonderland. This year, there are 20 installations, designed by international artists, and all accompanied by music.

Coastal Roots Farm is a nonprofit Jewish community farm on Saxony Road in Encinitas dedicated to growing healthy food and sharing it as widely as possible. Founded over a decade ago, their 67 acres include 17 acres of vegetable fields, gardens, chicken coops, and compost operations. They grow more than 80,000 pounds of organic produce every year and distribute 75 percent of it to San Diegans in need.

Would you like a chance to step back into history? On Saturday, Aug. 24, the Encinitas Preservation Association (EPA) is hosting a bus tour that will visit local historic sites and feature a rare opportunity to tour the 10-acre Bumann Ranch, originally homesteaded in 1886 and now on the National Registry of Historic Places. The ranch tour will be led by Richard Bumann, a mechanical designer and amateur historian, who has been living on the ranch with his wife Twink since 1985.

It’s not often that you get to see a star in the making, but if you stop by Poods Skatepark Bowl in Encinitas Community Park almost any weekday afternoon around 4 p.m. you’ll see a young boy doing some pretty amazing moves. He’s Kian Reef Fernandez, he’s 6 years old, and he’s on his way to becoming a skateboard pro. Kian started skating at age 4 and was in his first California Amateur Skateboard League (CASL) competition this February, in Huntington Beach.

Jeffery Laudenslager is a master sculptor whose kinetic artworks you’ve probably seen on Scripps Hospital campuses in La Jolla and Encinitas, and from the I-5 freeway as you drive by Del Mar. The wind is his collaborator: it adds another dimension to the tall, lustrous metal sculptures that shape-change when swayed by ambient breezes. They appear slim and weightless, but a 20- or 30-foot piece weighs about 350 pounds.
