    The importance of hypoxia in radiation therapy has been investigated for many decades, dating back to studies led by Thomlinson and Gray in the 1950s.Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) has long been known to contain subpopulations of cells with hypoxic regions conferring resistance to radiation therapy (RT).Hypoxic tumor cells are an attractive target because of inherent tumor specificity, as normal tissues generally do not contain hypoxic regions.
