ST. PAUL - Moorhead's Mason Kraft was named the winner of the Mr. Hockey Award on Sunday at the St. Paul RiverCentre. Sunday’s other big winner was Leo Gabriel of White Bear Lake, the recipient of the Frank Brimsek Award that goes to the state’s top senior goaltender. The Mr. Hockey Award, given to the state’s top senior skater, started in 1985 and the Frank Brimsek Award in 1995.

ST. PAUL — Hockey is a big deal in Moorhead. The folks in the Red River Valley town, hard against the North Dakota border, have been waiting decades for their beloved Spuds to lay their mitts on a state championship. So it’s only right to assume that Mason Kraft and Co. are going to be living the high life when the return home. Are you guys ready to be celebrities in Moorhead when you get back?

ST. PAUL - Mason Kraft scored four goals to lead top-seeded Moorhead to a 7-6 win over No. 2 Stillwater in the state Class 2A championship game Saturday night at the Xcel Energy Center. The title is the first for the Spuds, who had previously lost all eight of their state championship game appearances. Moorhead came out flying, scoring three times in the opening 2:24 and building a 5-1 first-period lead.

Moorhead’s Jon Ammerman in Class 2A and Hibbing/Chisholm’s Aaron Jamnick in Class 1A were named the state’s coaches of the year on Saturday by the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Association. Ammerman, in his 12th season leading the Spuds, guided Moorhead to a 28-2-1 record this season that included a x-x victory against Stillwater on Saturday in the state Class 2A championship game. The state title is the first in the program's history.

ST. PAUL — No. 5 seed Edina raced to an early three-goal lead then hung on to beat No. 3 seed St. Thomas Academy 4-3 on Saturday in the state Class 2A third place game at the Xcel Energy Center. Freddie Schnieder and Mason West scored for the Hornets (22-7-2) in the first period and Becker Wenkes made it 3-0 just 30 seconds into the second. After the teams traded goals, Nico Russ and Michael Mikan scored in the closing minutes to pull St. Thomas Academy (24-6-0) to within 4-3.
