Large crowd attends Candidate Forum in Fairplay

Over 100 people crowded into the American Legion in Fairplay Oct. 12 to listen to the candidates who are running for county office this year at the Fairplay Candidate Forum sponsored by the Park County League of Women Voters and the Platte Canyon and South Park Chambers of Commerce. Given the flavor of recent letters to the editor, one might expect there to be nasty mud-slinging comments and retorts from the candidates and audience.

October 20, 2024The Montreal Canadiens played three games in the second week of action for the 2024-25 season, and it was a disorganized mess. On Monday they lost 6-3 to Pittsburgh, on Thursday it was a 4-1 loss to Los Angeles, and on Saturday night they finally salvaged one point from the week in a 4-3 overtime loss to the New York Islanders. It’s early, but right now the Canadiens are a disorganized mess. The top line is not playing like we know they can. We should not be fooled by the stats.

September 17, 2024The annual golf tournament is a sure sign that a new season for the Montreal Canadiens is about to kick off. On Monday, players, coaching staff and management teed off in Laval, and we can almost smell the rink. The rookie tournament is done and there were no major surprises. Lane Hutson was dynamic, Logan Mailloux and David Reinbacher look close to ready, and Adam Engstrom may be another left shot defender with an NHL career ahead of him.

July 21, 2024The rebuild of the Montreal Canadiens has been underway, in earnest, since owner Geoff Molson relieved General Manager Marc Bergevin of his duties, and replaced him with the management duo of Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes. In less than three years of their tenure, the transformation has been profound, but it is yet incomplete. At the end of season press conference, GM Kent Hughes told reporters that two priorities as they continued the build would be to add goal scoring and physicality.

They posted a shutout 3-0 win against Columbus on Tuesday, March 12th and suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to the Bruins the following Thursday. January 28, 2024The Montreal Canadiens played three games this week. On Tuesday night they lost a 4-1 stinker to the Ottawa Senators. The New York Islanders were in town on Thursday and the result was a 4-3 win. Then on Saturday the Habs were in Pittsburgh to face the Penguins, and they claimed the loser point in a 3-2 overtime loss. Here are my thoughts on the Habs after 49 games. The three–centremen forward group isn’t likely to catch on across the league.
