In early 2011 an editor at a Canadian magazine — not a golf publication — invited me to write an article about a prominent golfer. I suggested Rory McIlroy, having first watched him during the 2007 Open Championship at Carnoustie after my Irish friend and fellow golf writer Ivan Morris told me I should watch the then-18-year-old amateur prodigy from Holywood in Northern Ireland.

Some tournaments linger in memory, especially for those who have a personal stake in the outcome. Perhaps nobody except Rory McIlroy’s family and friends cared more about the outcome of the Masters that he won at Augusta National than Timothy Gay. He’s the author of the new book on McIlroy titled Rory Land, which will be published May 13th.

Two full days have yet to pass as I write since Rory McIlroy‘s Masters win, which completed golf’s career Grand Slam. His deeply felt reaction on the final green when he holed his short birdie putt on the first playoff hole to defeat an oh-so-game Justin Rose will be an image that is sure to stay with anyone who watched. What a moment as McIlroy all but collapsed on the 18th green and held his head in his hands before rising and embracing his close friend and caddie Harry Diamond. Unforgettable.

Major events can bring major disappointments. Yes, the Masters is an annual “celebration” of golf but it’s also often a deeply painful experience for some players. I’ll reflect on the two saddest Masters moments I’ve seen in person, and others I’ve watched on telecasts. Sorry to be a downer, but this too is Masters reality. That this double dose of downers have lodged in my mind for nearly 40 years must say something. I’m just not sure what. One moment above all comes to mind.

How do we think about Greg Norman these days? This vexing question came up the other day during a group chat with some golf pros and other folks involved in the game. We were discussing him while deciding whether to attend his speech on March 25th at the Society of the Four Arts down the road in Palm Beach. Norman’s address was titled “The Way of the Shark: Lessons on Golf, Business, and Life.” I didn’t attend his talk, nor am I aware of anyone else in our group chat of 10 people who went.

This resonates with me, a supporter of the Toronto Maple Leafs since even before 1967, when they last won the Stanley Cup. They’re up 3-0 on the Ottawa Senators. They won’t lose, right? Right? How to Finally Divorce Your Toxic Sports Team - GQ https://t.co/e7TfGPV3ZJ

An enjoyable interview from Shane with 16-year-old prodigy Rory.

A lot has happened in the 20 years since filming this interview for @RTEsport (May 6th, 2005). Even back then, @McIlroyRory was chasing an Irish Grand Slam as a newly minted 16 year old. https://t.co/ACSoAnCn2t
