Women’s Challenge Cup finalists St Helens and Wigan Warriors have named their 21-woman squads ahead of Saturday’s Wembley showdown. It will be the first time, in either the men’s or the women’s game, that the two old rivals have met at the new Wembley Stadium and both sides go into the game at their strongest.

Who doesn’t love a good cup upset? There are few better experiences than seeing the underdog prevail and take the spoils, especially when they do it on the biggest of stages. Often, these upsets come in the earlier rounds as a lower league team takes the scalp of a much higher-placed side. But occasionally it happens in the final when a club beats the odds to make the celebrations even sweeter.

WIGAN prop Mary Coleman is quietly confident that the Warriors can complete a special hat-trick when they face off against oldest rivals St Helens at Wembley on Saturday. In July last year Denis Betts’ side finally got their first win over one of the country’s ‘big three’ – beating York 18-10. Then in last month’s semi-final, they added Leeds Rhinos to the list of teams they have beaten – meaning Saints are the last team to tick off the list.

NOT ONLY will Saturday be the first time Dani McGifford has run out at Wembley Stadium, it will also be the first time the St Helens winger has come up against Wigan Warriors while wearing the club’s famous Red Vee. The 30-year-old only converted to Rugby League from athletics ahead of the 2023 season and has spent much of her time waiting for an opportunity for an extended run in the side given the strength in depth the club have always possessed in the backs.
