You probably already realize this, but I work for a company that sponsors conferences. As the editor of Simple Talk, I actually get some ability to influence and choose some of the conferences we sponsor, and even some kinds of event we do. For example, at PASS Summit 2024 (which ended yesterday as I type this editorial,) I was able to hold a breakfast for 100 attendees.

The importance of rest of all types can’t be overstated. In today’s world, rest is a rare and valuable commodity. I am often reminded of a line in Pete Townshend’s song “Outlive the Dinosaur,” which goes, “Time is generous, more, take more… Time expansive, more, take more.” This line always resonates with me as I grow older. Rest is challenging to prioritize due to our numerous enjoyable and mundane responsibilities.

No matter how much I love social media, there are some annoying patterns that work better than most sincere ones. None of these bugs me more than the “Why don’t you work/what’s keeping you working like this?” posts. Most of these posts are just engagement farming fertilizer, but the do in fact brings up an interesting question. Are there other methods of working that aren’t just sitting behind a desk?
