Researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center are finding this especially true for developing new diagnostic capabilities and treatments for a variety of cancers. The process of diagnosing tumors during surgery, for example, hasn’t changed much over the decades. “You take the tissue specimens, freeze them, slice, stain, put it on a slide, then send it to the pathologist,” said Michael Ivan, M.D., associate professor of neurological surgery.
