More than most public colleges, Christopher Newport University, in Newport News, Va., is the embodiment of one person’s vision. Paul Trible was its president from 1996 to 2022, serving almost three times as long as anyone else. He remains a distinguished professor at the university and its highest-paid employee, making more than half a million dollars a year.
