The daughter of the late owners of this landmark property close to Waiwera Beach, says that her father, a builder, bought the bush-covered 1555sqm section in the early 1980s and the family would regularly go and camp there. After maintaining it carefully for years, her father eventually began constructing his and his wife’s dream home, with his son – who was also his apprentice – alongside to assist him.

When the current owners of 9 Keith Avenue, in Remuera, bought their much-loved, north-facing family home 26 years ago, it had been owned by a pair of sisters since the mid-1920s and was decidedly dilapidated. “It was so run-down I had to work there after work each night and at weekends for four months before my wife would even consider moving in,” he laughs.
