A special anniversary in the sporting history of Paisley has been fondly remembered. It is now 50 years since the Paisley Lions speedway team first appeared at the town’s Love Street track.

The passing of St Mirren Hall of Fame star Tony Connell has been described as a “sad loss” by Tony Fitzpatrick. The former Saints full-back sadly passed away on Hogmanay aged 80 but Fitzpatrick says that the memory of him playing for the Buddies will live on. Connell started off his career at Strathclyde and moved to Third Lanark, where he plied his trade for four years, before securing a move to Paisley in 1967 after the Thirds folded.
