1. Introduction The relation of humanity to the rest of the natural world is essentially one of dependence. Our continued survival and flourishing are utterly contingent upon the state and functioning of our environment, which supplies us with eatable food, drinkable water, and breathable air. In the most practical sense possible, we are existentially bound to the rest of nature.
