With the passage of House Bill 69 by Alaska's lower chamber on March 12, it seems the State House minority has been unsuccessful at convincing the majority that Alaska education is a failing system in need of complete overhaul. It is a tall task, and I hold nothing against the House minority. Nevertheless, we might look to HB69 (which now heads to the Senate) to help us understand where the majority feels education is succeeding. But first, let's do some simple math.

The Robert E. McNair Institute of Research and Service hosted a “Sustainability Game Night” at the Honors Center on Feb. 13, providing fun games for the over 30 attendees. Board games such as “Catan New Energies” and “Daybreak” and card games such as “Ecologies” were the main highlights of the night. These games had one common factor driving the players: teamwork. Since the main theme was sustainability, players had to work together to win, or everyone lost.

In preparation for a recent Anchorage School District elementary school field trip identified as " Snow School," parents received " Assumption of Risk and Liability Release " forms from an entity identifying itself as KMTA. Businesses need to protect themselves from frivolous lawsuits these days. However, the release form reads similar to what I would expect for combatants in an MMA event. So, I had to find out more about KMTA. Is it a business?

The Hart-Scott-Rodino (HSR) Act requires parties to transactionsthat meet certain thresholds to notify the Department of Justice(DOJ) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and observe a waitingperiod prior to closing unless certain exemptions apply. Thesethresholds are adjusted annually based on U.S. economic growth. Inaddition, based upon a law that became effective in 2023, HSRfiling fees are now adjusted annually. This year, HSR thresholdsand most HSR filing fees will significantly increase.
