2024 was an absurdly crowded year for RPGs, but it’s also a treasure trove—especially if you’re willing to look past all the big names. Fantasian: Neo Dimension is a neat middle ground. It’s a non-franchise IP from a less-known studio, but backed by Square Enix and led by some of the biggest legends from Final Fantasy’s classic era. So if that caught your eye over SaGa or Shiren the Wanderer, it’s understandable. But don’t sleep on SaGa, you’re missing out.

I was never interested in Grand Theft Auto. I get it, I was in middle school when GTA 3 came out. I understood why half my gaming friends were obsessed. I was a nerd, though. Before Skin Deep came across my desk, I had never even heard of it. That’s not to say there’s anything wrong, but that I went in completely blind. What is this game? Who knows, let’s just boot this bad boy up and see what happens. That’s probably for the best, because “immersive sims” don’t do a lot for me, and that’s exactly what Skin Deep is when you boil it down. However it’s also weird, scaled-down, relatively simple and fast-paced, and also, weird.

It’s hard to imagine anything even attempting to step up to The Sims, but here we are. As a more “realistic” alternative, inZOI is a beefy competitor, with high-fidelity visuals running on Unreal Engine 5, and a massive focus on self-expression rather than wacky hijinks. It’s an impressive game to look at for sure, making a heck of a first impression with its shiny graphics, extremely detailed character creator, and goofy cat characters strutting around for flavor.
