Residents can comment on cannabis program DEIR

Fallbrook area residents are being encouraged to learn and comment about the San Diego County “Socially Equitable Cannabis Program.”According to Fallbrook Community Planning Group Chair Eileen Delaney, “This is not about whether we approve or disapprove of cannabis. This is about taking an active role in determining the specifics of a program that is going to be implemented in all the unincorporated areas.”At the Feb.
RCPG needs one more Rainbow resident to volunteer

In the unincorporated areas of San Diego County, residents can be involved in county government by volunteering for their local planning group. Members of these community planning groups advise the San Diego County Board of Supervisors on planning and land use matters affecting their area. The Rainbow Community Planning Group has 11 seats, one of which is currently vacant. So, the group is looking for a fellow resident to help them preserve their way of life in Rainbow.
Collaborative effort puts out fires

Three fires started burning in the Fallbrook/Bonsall area in the early morning hours of Jan. 21 but were kept from growing out of control by the joint efforts of more than 40 fire departments. No cause has been revealed yet for any of the three as investigations continue, but arson is one possibility. The smallest of the three, the Riverview fire in the north part of Fallbrook was contained to one acre within three hours with only one outbuilding destroyed.
Crowded sidewalks endanger parade

The Fallbrook Christmas Parade scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7 is the 43rd time the event has been planned, but there is now some uncertainty that it will happen that has nothing to do with the weather. While setting out chairs to save spots has become a tradition in itself, not every sidewalk is wide enough to allow for pedestrian traffic behind the chairs. And that could be a problem.
FUHSD honors first Students of the Month

Fallbrook Union High School District held its first Student of the Month breakfast for the new school year, Thursday, Oct. 3, at North Coast Church. The honored seniors are Alejandro Betancourt, Lucia Mochel, and Elizabeth Tagle-Nava from Fallbrook High and Sophia Bezman from Oasis High. Betancourt, nominated by Alydia Han, has a 4.20 grade point average with a packed schedule including AP classes, sports (football, cross country and track), community service, and tutoring other students.
Local sculptor installs unique work in Pasadena

When the city of Pasadena put out a public call for a sculpture to add to its Art in Public Places program last year, Kellan Shanahan decided to combine his experiences in art, architecture and computer programming to create a one-of-a-kind piece for his submission. He fabricated a small-scale model that earned him a spot in the second round where he was interviewed by the Pasadena City Council about his proposal. Once his project was chosen, building it took him three months.
Avocado Festival is back for 37th year

Along with the traditional avocado-related contests and activities, this year's Avocado Festival is featuring more local musicians, food and drink providers, growers and artists. Entertainment at the Main Stage will be provided by local groups Soul remedy, Raiz Muzik, and The Gin n' Tonix. Other performers include ballet folklorico groups, belly dancing and a jazz band.
New ambulance now in service

North County Fire Protection District dedicated its new advanced life-support ambulance at Fire Station 1 on April 10. Besides members of the NCFPD board, attendees included staff and board members of the Fallbrook Regional Health District which paid for almost half of the cost of the ambulance. Fire Chief Keith McReynolds said, "It has been a long time since we put one (ambulance) in service, in decades." He joined the district in 1990, when there were five engines and three ambulances.

Visible address signs are key to emergency response

Having your address clearly marked on your house is important in case of an emergency, so first responders can find your home in a timely manner. In rural areas like Fallbrook, this is especially important as some residents live far off the main road listed as their address. For example, my friend Margaret, who just turned 87, lives roughly a mile off a main road in Rainbow. She fell in her kitchen on Feb. 29, suffering a compound fracture to her lower right leg.
