    Last week we shared Part 1 of the Bobby Jack Wright story. In it we focused on the Mission native’s life from grade school through high school. It included highlights of his years growing up on Sunrise Lane in north Mission, and of his time as a member of the Mission Eagles’ baseball team, the 1966 Eagles’ B Team football team, under Coach Robert Capello, and on the 1967and 1968 Eagles’ varsity football teams, under Coach Elbert “Lum” Wright.

    If you were on the Family Feud gameshow and the category was “Mission, Texas native who played football for the Eagles and went on to football coaching greatness” and you answered Tom Landry, you’d almost certainly have the No. 1 answer. However, the No. 2 answer would most likely be Bobby Jack Wright. Why Bobby Jack Wright? Because this Mission native had a 42 year coaching career and helped lead two different college teams to national championships.

    High school tennis may not be as big of a spectator sport, or receive as much media coverage, as sports such as football, volleyball, basketball and baseball are and receive, but maybe it should. Especially when it is played at such a high level, like it is at Sharyland High School. Case in point, earlier this school year the Sharyland Rattlers’ team tennis team made history by being the first SHS tennis team to win the Region 4 championship and advance to the UIL 5A State Tournament.

    If you were a fan of Mission Eagles’ football in the mid to late 60’s you may not remember Coach Robert Capello, Sr. That’s because he coached what was at that time referred to as the Eagles’ “B Team”, but is now referred to as junior varsity. But even if you remember Capello, you may not know that he went on to have a long and illustrious coaching career. That is why some of his former players are organizing a luncheon in his honor almost 60 years later.

    Tuesday night at the Coach Iris G. Iglesias Softball Complex, the Rio Grande City Lady Rattlers demonstrated why they’re at the top of the District 30-5A standings by defeating the Mission High Lady Eagles by a score of 9-0. With the win, the Lady Rattlers improved to 15-0 while the Lady Eagles dropped to 11-4 with the loss. Heading into this game, the Lady Eagles were on a roll.
