Parts of the Sunflower State have picked up a good amount of rainfall over the last 48 hours, especially across south and eastern Kansas. This brings the official rainfall total for May in Wichita to 5.65″ as of midnight. This number will continue to climb when we factor in today’s rainfall and the other round of showers expected this week. We have seen rain off and on all day.

Heavy rain started the day, but we have dried out for the afternoon. Most areas across the state have seen at least trace amounts of rain in the last 48 hours, but some areas across southcentral and southeastern Kansas have seen significant amounts of rain. Flood Watches are in place for parts of southcentral Kansas through 7 PM Monday.

Cloud cover has built back into the Sunflower State this afternoon, and a few spotty showers have popped up this evening. Rain chances will increase overnight with temperatures ranging from the 40s to the 60s by daybreak tomorrow. A few storms could become severe at times with large hail and strong winds as the main concerns. A Marginal Risk for severe weather is in place for a large portion of the state tonight, with a slight risk over parts of southcentral Kansas along the Oklahoma state line.

The rain we saw this morning is now well to our east in Missouri as the low-pressure system continues to track away from the Sunflower State. Winds will be gusty out of the north as cooler air rushes in the wake of the passing cold front. Temperatures this afternoon will be comfortable in the low to mid-70s. Areas closer to the Oklahoma State line could flirt with the 80s while those in our Nebraska counties will only reach the upper 60s. We keep the sunny skies around through tomorrow.

A TORNADO WATCH has been issued for Kay County, Oklahoma, through 7 PM tonight. Storms are beginning to fire up ahead of the passing cold front in Oklahoma. This is where we have humid, warm air in place to help fuel storms this afternoon. Moisture will continue to filter north into Kansas, and we will see storms ramp up this evening. We have a Moderate Risk in place for southeastern Kansas today, but also an Enhanced Risk and a Slight Risk for much of central Kansas.
