Cumbria’s Strongest Man and Woman competition is back – and this year it is set to be the biggest show yet. The show will take place this weekend on Saturday May 31 from 11am until 5pm at Rivendell, in Great Clifton, Workington. Nine women and 14 men will be battling it out and competing to take home a title belt and be crowned Cumbria’s strongest man and woman.

A Carlisle woman has been charged with attempted murder after a police officer was stabbed in the face. Police were called yesterday at 9.30am to an address in the area of Newtown Road in Carlisle, where officers attended to speak with the occupant. Whilst at the property two police officers were assaulted with a knife. A female officer suffered a facial injury described as not life threatening. A male officer suffered a hand injury described as not life changing.

Lake District mountain rescue teams had a busy bank holiday weekend. Langdale Ambleside Mountain rescue were called out three times to help lost walkers and stuck and struggling wild campers. Team members were first called out to two very lost walkers on Friday May 23 at 8.39pm by Cumbria Police. The walkers were lost in the vicinity of Ore Gap after becoming disoriented by low cloud. The duo were also not aware of the way they had walked up the fell and also did not know where they had parked.

A Cumbrian travel agency has been named one of the best in the North West for a fourth time. Cumbria Travel, an independent travel agency owned by Tricia Rickerby and Leanne Miller, has had its Dunmail Park store scoop a top spot in the renowned Travel Trade Gazette awards. It marks the fourth time Cumbria Travel’s Workington branch has been recognised in the awards as one of the North West’s top travel agents.

A training exercise turned into a real rescue for Lake District mountain rescue teams this week. Keswick Mountain Rescue were alerted by one of their own team members after a search dog handler significantly injured their leg during an evening training exercise. The team said it was an example of the day most mountain rescuers dread – being rescued themselves.
