“Border Patrol always had the right to grill people trying to enter the US, right,” Guardian US reporter Adam Gabbatt tells Michael Safi. “But from what we can tell now, Border Patrol agents are now much more likely to basically get into people’s business, so to search people’s devices, particularly mobile phones, and there seems to have been a real spike in the number of people being questioned and now detained.

Rachel Reeves had said that her government was all about growth. But as she stood up to give her spring statement it was clear that green shoots could not yet be seen. The UK’s growth forecast for this year had been halved, leaving the chancellor with a problem. It was a new world of global insecurity, she said, but her response was not to raise taxes or break her fiscal rules. Instead, she would make big cuts – including to welfare.

On Tuesday the welfare secretary, Liz Kendall, set out her plans to save £5bn from the government’s welfare bill. The current situation is unsustainable, the government says. With the numbers of people claiming disability benefits soaring, it was time for a fairer system, she said. For many disabled people, who have felt the effects of successive governments’ attempts to reform the welfare system, it was a stressful moment.

On Friday, the MP Rupert Lowe criticised Nigel Farage in an interview with the Daily Mail, saying Reform UK was a “protest party led by the Messiah”, and that it was “too early to know whether Nigel will deliver the goods” and become prime minister. The next day, Lowe was suspended by the party. Reform UK published a statement making a series of allegations against him, including that he had made threats against the party chair, Zia Yusuf.
