    As I write this, I am watching the smoke billow up from Altadena, a mile away. Three friends have already told me they lost their homes. I am trying to find my neighbor to deal with a damaged tree in her yard about to fall on my house, but she isn’t here. We are almost certainly experiencing the costliest wildfires in the history of Southern California. We have lost much and will be working to recover for a long time to come.

As Levon (2011: 70) argues, ‘we must focus on the ways in which multiple systems of social stratification (including sexuality, gender, race, and class, among many others) exist simultaneously and in interaction’.

    August and September’s Book Club and Creative Questions dates • I spoke last week at the Chautauqua Institution on ‘Why Awe Matters’ - a tricky subject when there are so many terrible things going on in the world. I’m conscious, always, that soft emotions such as awe can seem completely frivolous, and in extremely short supply. For me, that shows exactly how much we need it. We have this instinctive reflex that lets us suddenly understand the context of human life, and it’s there to help us.

    On 28th June 1970 the first ever Pride marches took place in major cities across the US to mark the first anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. One year prior at The Stonewall Inn, a popular New York City gay bar, police raided for the second time in one week. At a time when same-sex relationships were outlawed, the raids sparked backlash from frustrated  patrons who were met with police violence.

I had in mind something like Match.com, but for finding the right therapist. In 2014, the image of mental health was secretive, shameful even. People did not talk openly about their worries, or blithely seek diagnoses.
