Starred Review Graphic novels are the perfect format for middle school contemporary stories. Picturing all the roller coaster emotions of middle school helps show the humor and humanity in them. Apple Crush is a sequel to Stepping Stones, though it's easy to catch up if you haven't read the first book.

    A fast-paced dip into the possibility of a world without human emotions. A teenage girl refuses a medical procedure to remove her heart and her emotions. June lives in a future in which a reclusive Scientist has pioneered a procedure to remove hearts, thus eliminating all “sadness, anxiety, and anger.” The downside is that it numbs pleasurable feelings, too. Most people around June have had the procedure done; for young people, in part because doing so helps them become more focused and successful.

A year must have felt even longer to Lonnie Mann, struggling through middle-school yeshiva as a closeted gay kid in a closed Orthodox Jewish community and oppressive family.
