In late November 2023 the UK Supreme Court ruled that a group of Deliveroo riders aren’t in an employment relationship with Deliveroo and can’t therefore access collective bargaining rights under trade union law. The UK’s highest court found that the riders are independent self-employed contractors, rather than workers. The main basis for this judgment was that Deliveroo riders are not obliged to be available at any time or to accept jobs and can arrange substitute riders for deliveries.
