British solar power hits new record, thanks to sunny weather

Sunny weather helped British solar power generate a new record high of more than 12.5 gigawatts of electricity on Tuesday. The National Energy System Operator (Neso) said the record 12.569 gigawatts of power from solar – equivalent to around four new nuclear power plants – was generated between 12:30 and 1pm on Tuesday. A spokesperson for Neso said it was “great to see solar being able to play an ever-increasing role in our energy mix”.

What’s happening? A short-lived plume of warmer air from North Africa will drift northwards to the UK, encouraging temperatures to recover from midweek onwards after a very chilly few days. What can we expect with our temperatures this week? We'll keep cold frosty nights and chilly feeling days for now, but come Thursday there will be highs of around 18C - and possibly nearer 20C in some sheltered South Eastern parts.

After highs of 18C over the weekend, temperatures across the UK have plummeted. A coating of snow fell at the Cheltenham Festival on Wednesday morning and a yellow weather warning for ice has also been issued for parts of northern England on Thursday. Temperatures in some parts are expected to drop to below freezing by the weekend for the end of what is sometimes called “fool’s spring”.

On Tuesday, we had the earliest season snow in southern areas since November 2008. By Tuesday night, the temperature dropped near -12C in northern Scotland - the earliest we’ve seen temperatures this low since 1998. This cold spell is a notable one.
