I had a spiritual awakening when I read Gillian Flynn’s take down of cool girls in Gone Girl and she trope by trope took down the manic pixie beer-swigging ‘I’m not like other girls’ Cool Girl. But despite Gillian’s best efforts, we all still love a cool girl. ‘She’s so cool’ we trill, only this time the coolest girl of all isn’t interested in being cool, she’s just the one who really knows what she likes and what she doesn’t. She’s hard to buy for but that’s why we love her. That’s why she’s cool.
