1 INTRODUCTION Chief executive officers (CEOs) play crucial roles in building foundations, making top-level managerial decisions and ensuring businesses’ overall success. Since Becker (1962), researchers have recognized two different CEO types: generalist CEOs who accumulate transferrable skills by working at different firms or industries and specialist CEOs who accumulate more firm- or industry-specific skills.
