Hometown favorite Giovanni Santillan returned to glory in San Diego, defeating welterweight Angel Beltran in a Top Rank boxing fight Saturday at Pechanga Arena. It was a year ago in the same arena where Santillan lost by a 10th-round TKO to current WBO World Welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr. Santillan did win one fight after that loss, but he came in Saturday looking to erase the memory of the loss in his hometown.

Donnie Edwards grew up in Chula Vista and went on to become a football star playing for UCLA and the San Diego Chargers. But he credits a local Boys & Girls Club for helping shape the trajectory of his career, which led to Thursday and what Edwards called “a full circle moment for me” – being inducted into the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Alumni Hall of Fame. “I’m from San Diego,” said Edwards, receiving the award at a ceremony at the Marriott Marquis hotel in the Gaslamp.

The WonderCon pop culture convention marked its 37th year this weekend with a time-traveling look to the past. WonderCon, the sister convention of San Diego’s much-larger Comic-Con, has unveiled historic photos of earlier conventions that provide a glimpse into the beginnings of Comic-Con and its influence on pop culture. “It’s a great window into Comic-Con’s origins,” said Chief Communications and StrategyOfficer David Glanzer.

Not even the return of the big man helped. San Diego State made a quick exit from the NCAA Tournament Tuesday, getting blown out by North Carolina, 95-68, in a First Four matchup in Dayton, Ohio. The Aztecs, like the Tar Heels, came into the game as the 11th seed in the South Region, but got a giant boost with the return of 7-footer Magoon Gwath, the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year who had been out for nearly a month with a knee injury.
