AbstractSpecies diversification is characterized by speciation and extinction, the rates of which can, under some assumptions, be estimated from time-calibrated phylogenies. However, maximum likelihood estimation methods (MLE) for inferring rates are limited to simpler models and can show bias, particularly in small phylogenies.

AbstractSlowdowns in lineage accumulation are often observed in phylogenies of extant species. One explanation for this is the presence of ecological limits to diversity and hence to diversification.

AbstractState-dependent speciation and extinction (SSE) models provide a framework for quantifying whether species traits have an impact on evolutionary rates and how this shapes the variation in species richness among clades in a phylogeny. However, SSE models are becoming increasingly complex, limiting the application of likelihood-based inference methods. Approximate Bayesian computation (ABC), a likelihood-free approach, is a potentially powerful alternative for estimating parameters.
