Skip to content Photo courtesy of the Washington Capitals Did Alex Ovechkin score? Yes. Plus: Even though he let in five goals, Clay Stevenson was great. He came up with a lot of big saves and the goals scored against him were goals not many, if any, goalies were going to stop. Minus: There was a lot not to like about the Caps game, but the Caps were playing shorthanded, hurt and had nothing to play for besides not trying to get hurt.

Skip to content Did Alex Ovechkin score? Yes. He scored goal #890. Plus: Both Jakob Chychrun and Aliaksei Protas joined some new clubs. Chychrun scored his 20th of the season and Protas scored his 30th of the season. Both new highs for the both. Minus: Caps took too many stupid penalties in which Sabres scored on two of them on. It's fine now that they are top of the league but these are penalties that can't happen in the playoffs.

There’s something about the Buffalo Sabres facing the Capitals that turns them into the best team in the league (or at least a much tougher team to play than they have any right to be). In the last 10 games against the Caps, the Sabres, consistently one of the worst teams in the NHL every season, averages 4.2 goals a game, and that trend continued as they put up an eight spot on the Caps in yesterday afternoon’s game. The game was essentially lost on two plays that looked almost identical.

The Red Wings must have nightmares about playing the Caps in the third period. Just less than two weeks ago, they took a 2-1 lead into the third only to see the Caps go on a four goal tear to win the game. Last night, with the game tied, the Caps again used a big final frame to win, this time adding three goals in the third period. But while the goals were great (and obviously necessary), this win doesn’t happen without a huge save that Logan Thompson made just thirty seconds into the third period.

Skip to content Photo courtesy of Washington Capitals Did Alex Ovechkin score? No. Plus: The Red Wings have one of the best power plays in the NHL and the Caps did not give them a chance to use it, as they refrained from taking even a single penalty the whole game. The Caps are a strong five-on-five team, so keeping the game at even strength will always give them the advantage over most teams and that worked tonight.

Skip to content Mar 9, 2025; Washington, District of Columbia, USA; Washington Capitals center Connor McMichael (24) celebrates with teammates after scoring a goal against the Seattle Kraken in the third period at Capital One Arena. Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images Sunday's afternoon game against Kraken wasn't looking like the Capitals best. The Kraken are a mediocre team who were playing quite tired. The Caps really should have taken control of the game off the bat and never let it go.
