As much as critics would like to say ‘the golden age’ of music was when artists sold their records purely on talent, this has never been so. Fashion has always played a prominant role in the industry and is one of the reasons why so many bands and artists are as popular as they are. Bands like The Rolling Stones and artists like David Bowie based their acts on having an individuality that made people take notice of not only their songs but also their clothes and style.

I’ve never been a huge fan of The Black Keys in the past, I’ve quite liked them but never really find myself going back to listen to their albums. From what I’ve heard of their new album Turn Blue, though, it seems like the blues-rock duo have taken a big step forwards with their sound. ‘Fever’ is a satisfying pop stomper with plenty of soul, and the title track revealed last month is a woozy classic in the making.

Although the tracks that have so far surfaced from The Great Gatsby soundtrack have been interesting, we’ve all been waiting to hear this one. Producer Mark Ronson debuted Beyonce and OutKast’s Andre 3000’s version of Amy Winehouse’s track on his radio show last night, and now there’s a radio rip you can hear below. Amy’s dad Mitch has already had his say on the track, calling it “terrible” – which is a bit harsh, although you definitely wouldn’t call it “brilliant”. I’ll go with “different”.

Unusually for a new Coldplay album, the build-up to new LP Ghost Stories seems quite muted. Remember, this is the band that used to cause stock market fluctuations with the announcement of new albums. But these days things are much more reserved.

Death Grips – The Money Store[rating: 3.5/5]Buy The Money StoreSacramento trio Death Grips, MC Ride and production duo Andy Morin and Zach Hill, caused a bit of a stir in the hip-hop world last year with their debut album Exmilitary. So much of a stir, in fact, that Epic not only decided to sign them up but have committed to putting two Death Grips albums out in 2012.

Legendary alt/grunge rock band Pixies released their first new album in over 20 years for Record Store Day this weekend. Well, I say ‘new album’ but Indie Cindy is actually a collection of the bands last few EPs.It’s still a big deal though, not just because it’s the Pixies but also because it’s very good collection of EPs.If you missed out on copping Indie Cindy at a record store, which I’m sure a lot of people did, then you can stream it in full below.

N’Dea Davenport – ‘Sunlight’[rating:3.5/5]Very much nailing an audio sandscape of the song’s title, ‘Sunlight’ sounds like the cousin of many a summer chill-out tune matched with Jamiroquai and, at times, the beat from South Park’s chef’s ode to his chocolate baked goods. Singer Davenport captures the mood perfectly too with a smooth, seventies feel.

16 APR Watch: Azealia Banks – ‘Yung Rapunxel’ video Still no word on US rapper Azealia Banks’ highly anticipated and constantly delayed debut album Broke With Expensive Taste, but today we have been treated to a video for her latest release ‘Yung Rapunxel’. The video, which was directed by Jam Sutton, impressively manages to live up to the frightening artwork for the single (above) by featuring a lot of dark and unsettling imagery.

Slightly bonkers Australian electro-pop duo Empire Of The Sun are preparing to release the follow-up to their all-conquering 2009 debut album Walking On A Dream this summer, and have today released the lead single ‘Alive’. Called Ice On The Dune, the new album is set for release in June and judging by ‘Alive’ it won’t be differing too much from their debut.
