I have been fascinated with the thought of modular weapons systems for as long as I can remember. I tend to fluctuate between wanting to keep pistols bone stock and going absolutely crazy with customizations. Modularity really helps with the latter, so today I’d like to look at 3 modular handgun systems today. We will be going over the P320 from Sig Sauer, the Springfield Echelon, and the Beretta APX.

So yes, let’s start off by getting this out of the way. Yes, AKs are the “bad guy” rifles in the eyes of most of the Western world, but let’s put this aside and look at the Zastava M70 pattern rifles. First, let’s explain the difference between standard AKM rifles and Yugo patterns. The terms “AKM” and “Yugo rifle” refer to different types of firearms, primarily associated with the AK (Avtomat Kalashnikova) platform and Yugoslavian military firearms, respectively.

SIG Sauer has been making headlines for a while now, especially after they were selected as the winners of the US military’s XM17 modular handgun competition. But something new is on the way… well kind of. During the SIG Next event that was held from June 24-26th 2024 they announced that they are bringing back, in an original iteration the P226 40th Anniversary edition. Now I know, the P226 hasn’t really gone away with the likes of the MK. 25, Legion, and other variations that continue to pop up.
