    Kent State University has long had an undergraduate literary magazine, but it lacked a graduate, student-run publication. A pair of graduate students is trying to change that, but they need help from the community to bring the first issue to life, after some planned-upon funding fell through. The Haymaker Literary Journal’s mission is to reflect the area’s natural landscape and unique position around industrial cities like Akron, Cleveland and Youngstown.

    The semifinals of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) playoffs began on Sunday, Sept. 29, as the league caps off a legendary, record-breaking season. Two nearby teams, the New York Liberty and the Connecticut Sun, are competing for a spot in this year’s finals. Eight teams had advanced to the playoffs from 12 nationwide. The first round of the tournament’s format was a best of three series. No surprises took place the first week.

    Mario and Luigi hats dot the stage. A conductor waves the baton in a themed blazer. Large crescendos of the Super Mario Bros. theme echoed last May through the Maltz Performing Arts Center at Case Western Reserve University. The Video Game Symphony, based in Kent, has been playing popular tunes from games like these since being founded in 2023. The group’s founders, Jaclyn Kurtz and Andrew Keller, met while pursuing graduate degrees at Kent State University’s School of Music.
