Kent State University has long had an undergraduate literary magazine, but it lacked a graduate, student-run publication. A pair of graduate students is trying to change that, but they need help from the community to bring the first issue to life, after some planned-upon funding fell through. The Haymaker Literary Journal’s mission is to reflect the area’s natural landscape and unique position around industrial cities like Akron, Cleveland and Youngstown.

The semifinals of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) playoffs began on Sunday, Sept. 29, as the league caps off a legendary, record-breaking season. Two nearby teams, the New York Liberty and the Connecticut Sun, are competing for a spot in this year’s finals. Eight teams had advanced to the playoffs from 12 nationwide. The first round of the tournament’s format was a best of three series. No surprises took place the first week.

New Kent symphony celebrates the music of video games

Mario and Luigi hats dot the stage. A conductor waves the baton in a themed blazer. Large crescendos of the Super Mario Bros. theme echoed last May through the Maltz Performing Arts Center at Case Western Reserve University. The Video Game Symphony, based in Kent, has been playing popular tunes from games like these since being founded in 2023. The group’s founders, Jaclyn Kurtz and Andrew Keller, met while pursuing graduate degrees at Kent State University’s School of Music.
KSU Downtown Gallery continues long history featuring art from the region

First opening in 1997, the KSU Downtown Gallery has operated as a bridge between the city and the university, showcasing the work of local artists downtown for almost three decades. The gallery was formed under a different name and in a different building. It began as Gallery 138, like its then address on East Main Street.
Kent native Kayla Fischer enters her second season in professional soccer at Louisville

On the day of the 2023 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Draft, Kayla Fischer was in scrubs completing a 12-hour nursing clinical at Ohio State University. Her mom drove down and picked her up, and the two watched the event with friends and snacks. Fischer, who first started playing soccer in Kent when she was 3, was drafted to play for Racing Louisville FC in Louisville, Kentucky. She dropped her nurse practitioner classes and took a leave of absence the next day.

The city of Streetsboro is looking to update its ordinances with regulations on nuisance properties. The main purpose of the change is to outline how officials must serve notices to residents, what citizens are guaranteed during the process and what happens to residents who do not comply. Streetsboro City Council members began editing a draft ordinance during a working session Monday night. The meeting is one of many to come before the council votes to change the current law.
Roosevelt assistant principal reflects on career before retirement

Mary Lynn Bush — longtime assistant principal at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent — is retiring after 15 years of service in the role. Bush’s duties included overseeing instruction at the school, including evaluating and observing teachers, and helping implement best instructional practices in the classroom. She served as a student advocate for two graduating classes at a time, attending all Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings and 504 plan meetings for students with disabilities.
Multiple people overdosed and were treated at the Eagles club in Ravenna

Six people were treated for apparent overdoses after using cocaine possibly mixed with fentanyl at the Eagles Club on Cleveland Road in Ravenna on Saturday night, according to a police report from the incident and a statement from public health officials. All six survived after the Ravenna Police Department and local fire departments responded. At least three people were treated with Narcan. One man did not have a pulse when officers arrived, police said.
