The WSL has made a bold but necessary decision to relocate the Gold Coast Pro from Snapper Rocks to Burleigh. In the wake of ex-tropical cyclone Alfred, the Superbank stretch is lacking one essential ingredient – sand. Organisers have made the call that even the proverbial Surfing Sandman – The Tweed River Bypass – will not be capable of replenishing the ten’s of thousands of cubic metres of sand required to make the Superbank a viable option for competition.

As fans waited patiently to watch sub-par Supertubos break sporadically over the waiting period for the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, it was hard not to wonder about the other waves in the area. The Portugal event is listed as being mobile, but there was never a hint of going beyond Supertubos, which resembled a glorified, onshore closeout for much of the event.

Today, our trusted Gold Coast lensman, Simon ‘Swilly’ Williams completed a lap of the Gold Coast with his camera. As you can see from the images, the region has been gutted by Cyclone Arthur. Dbah was the worst affected by the storm damage according to Swilly, “Dbah is gone… Never seen Dbah like that. Wild how much sand has gone and no sand at all from the Spit to Burleigh.” It’s likely to be some time before the sand is replenished.
