MP Luke Murphy (Image: House of Commons) My grandparents worked as cleaners, doing tough, low-paid jobs. But they were able to raise a family in a council house that gave them security and dignity. That stability – affordable housing, decent public services, fair wages – helped give my family a shot at a better life. It gave them the chance to believe that things could get better. Too many people in Basingstoke today feel that opportunity is slipping further out of reach.

After 14 years of broken promises, people in Basingstoke and across Britain understandably doubt that politics can make a difference to their lives.
