CUMBERLAND – Rhode Island Energy officials confirmed during a community forum in Cumberland that electric bills would drop an average of 17 percent as of April 1. They attributed the high rates over winter to simple supply and demand that surges during colder weather. “We’re going to experience this every year,” said Brian Schuster, head of external affairs at the utility, until other factors are involved, including when natural gas becomes more affordable.

CENTRAL FALLS – Government contract projects such as the new Central Falls High School are required to allocate 15 percent of their contract value toward minority-owned businesses (MBEs) and women-owned businesses (WBEs). That comes “with a city goal of reaching 25 percent for all contracts in excess of $10,000,” says City Solicitor Matt Jerzyk. “It has been a priority for Mayor Rivera to ensure that MBEs and WBEs have equal access to government contracts,” he said.

CENTRAL FALLS – City officials are set to request a special election for a new Ward 4 city councilor. The clerk, said spokesperson Sarah Dell, is in the process of scheduling a meeting with the Board of Canvassers to request the special election. “From there, they’d request the special election from the Board of Elections, who needs to approve it, potentially by the end of the month,” she added.

CENTRAL FALLS – A design bid for a new soft-surface playground at Raices Dual Language Academy on Hunt Street got the green light from the Central Falls School Building Committee last Wednesday, April 2, for recommendation to the Purchasing Board. The Purchasing Board is set to take the final vote to approve the bid today, April 9, so construction can be substantially complete in time for officials to submit a project reimbursement request to the Rhode Island Department of Education by June 30.
