Samoa's Ministry of Works, Transport, and Infrastructure chief executive says the final fate of the sunken Manawanui is still to be decided. The New Zealand Navy vessel sank off the coast of Upolu in October last year, with a report into the grounding finding the crew were undertrained and the boat was not up to the task it was doing. Fui Tupa'i Simanu said in a statement that the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation is conducting an independent report on the wreck.

Fiji's Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says that as far as Fiji is concerned, Fijians of Indian descent are Fijian. While Fiji is part of the Pacific, Indo-Fijians are not classified as Pacific peoples in New Zealand; instead, they are listed under Indian and Asian on the Stats NZ website. "The 'Fijian Indian' ethnic group is currently classified under 'Asian,' in the subcategory 'Indian', along with other diasporic Indian ethnic groups," Stats NZ told RNZ Pacific.

The Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) is echoing calls for freedom of expression and press freedom to be upheld across the Pacific. Both the Palau Media Council and the Pacific Freedom Forum have voiced concerns over a defamation case filed by Palau's President Surangel Whipps Jr's father against the national newspaper, Island Times Palau. Whipps Snr's company, Surangel and Sons, filed the civil lawsuit against the newspaper's editor Leilani Reklai on Wednesday, 29 October.
