New American Experience Has Parallels to West Lake Landfill

In the late 1970s, residents of Love Canal in Niagara Falls, NY, discovered that their homes, schools, and playgrounds were built on top of a former chemical waste dump. Love Canal was the first Superfund site identified for cleanup. The story has parallels to the local West Lake Landfill Superfund site. In a story all too familiar, thousands of tons of radioactive waste from World War II were illegally dumped in a Bridgeton, MO, landfill in 1973.

Chouteau's Journal: In His Own Words examines Auguste Chouteau's 14-page, handwritten account of St. Louis’s founding on February 14, 1764. Chouteau was known as a raconteur and is considered the founding father of St. Louis. His journal is a rare, eyewitness account of the activities surrounding the city's founding; very few cities in the world have a first-person account of its founding.
Save Public Media from a Bill that Would Zero Out Funding

NewsPublic media serves 99% of the United States, including the most remote communities, with high-quality, noncommercial programming and services every day, but that service is now in jeopardy. On July 13, the U.S. House Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittees released its draft fiscal year 2024 appropriations legislation that proposed to zero out federal funding for public media.
