Sumner and the New Brighton suburbs have all seen renewed development during the last four years, with numerous multi-million-dollar projects ranging from blocks of town houses to resort-style housing complexes under way or completed.

The neutral palette includes an array of off-whites and earthy beige and clay tones, through to deep browns and charcoals, providing scope to create a layered look for every room. Nature’s colours, such as beige, clay, and all shades of green have become increasingly popular during the last few years.

Fires are still top of the list for many homeowners, for the warmth and ambience they create, and modern wood, pellet, and gas fires are aesthetically pleasing, besides being functional. Heat pumps are commonplace throughout the country, and an increasing number of people are having radiator systems installed in new builds.

While I enjoy fireworks displays, and sparklers especially, I’m not a fan of uncontrolled crackers, snaps, smoke balls, fountains, rockets, and wheels. Rather I’m not a fan of those who light them up at odd hours of the day and night, indiscriminately firing them off in all directions, both in the lead up to, and for several days and weeks after 5 November. “Bah humbug”, you might think, but you’d be wrong.

Tracy Ahern loves animals and shows, and it is just as well. Tracy spends her mornings, afternoons, and sometimes weekends, planning around numerous farm animals that need to be accommodated during Canterbury’s largest agricultural and pastoral show, held annually in mid-November. This year’s show is more “farm to plate” than last year’s, say Tracy, part of a deliberate evolution towards sustainability. While not a “farm girl”, Tracy describes herself as “land-affiliated”.

By Lynda PapeschThe middle of September is the best possible time to plant your crop if you fancy enjoying them on Christmas Day, although any time from now through to December will see you harvesting through to March. Don’t worry if your garden isn’t large. Potatoes grow well in bags too, including long narrow hanging bags. Roll the bags down to plant the tubers, and mound your potatoes as shoots grow. Feed your potatoes every four weeks to replenish nutrients.
