NICK EICHER, HOST: And I’m Nick Eicher. A military helicopter crashed into American Airlines flight 5342 over Washington Wednesday night. A fireball was visible and the doomed aircraft dropped into the Potomac River along with 60 passengers. Some of them were returning from a figure skating competition in Wichita last week.

After serving more than a decade on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. Marco Rubio, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of state, faced a panel of allies at his confirmation hearing today. The ranking Democrat on the committee, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, began by expressing her support for Rubio’s appointment. In his opening statement, Rubio rebuked what he called the delusional view that nations can cooperate as “one world” while setting aside their individual interests.

Emergency crews worked to rescue stranded residents and to airlift supplies into Western North Carolina on Sunday, two days after Tropical Storm Helene brought catastrophic floods that cut utilities and closed major roads in and out of the region. As rivers and streams breached their banks, rushing water filled many neighborhoods in Asheville, N.C., including the business district where WORLD has its headquarters.
