A truly sound solo debut. Regular readers will know that there are no limits to AUK’s musical reach. Featuring artists from North America to the Antipodes, we also know there is no shortage of equally fine talent closer to home. Michael Robert Murphy is one such artist, so close to home he can probably be spotted from AUK Towers in Liverpool.

Deep thoughts and a serious health scare. If this album’s title seems rather obscure, it turns out to be well-chosen. John Moreland has been widely covered in these pages to unanimous praise for the heartfelt candour in which this songwriter from Tulsa tells his stories from the gloomier end of the human condition. Moreland has been compared to many great artists. Springsteen, Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt come most readily to mind. These are valid and big names, but Moreland is a complete original.

Empathetic stories of life in a small town. This album is a collection of stories about people in a small town who are living their lives as best as they can. They are getting by, but frequently only just as they face hardship, loneliness and all manner of other problems, physical and mental. From a small town herself, Barbara Lynch puts herself in the shoes of these folks with such understanding, empathy and love.
