SOBE Concerned Citizens are calling attention to the one year anniversary of the August 10, 2023 Public Hearing at the Eugenia Atkinson Center convened by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA). This meeting was a required Public Comment opportunity for citizens to respond to Ohio EPA’s then-DRAFT permit-to-install-and-operate a pyrolysis “Thermolyzer” in Youngstown, which was issued on July 6, 2023 to SOBE Thermal Energy.

The mantra in communities around Tamarack is this: “The Talon mine is a done deal.” Yet, nothing could be farther from the truth. Talon Metals is a very small company that doesn’t have the funds to build the proposed mine. It is marketing a fairy tale to the public, presenting its project as the greatest and most innovative new high sulfide mine. Yet, Talon’s stock price is currently at 12 cents a share; pretty much worthless relative to the current market.

The News Tribune Editorial Board and legislators from both parties have endorsed messaging that Minnesota is a “ mining-friendly state ,” and therefore the job is to help secure the development of mineral resources for mining companies following Minnesota’s best practices. Unfortunately, such views don’t have their facts straight. Mining is only a small percentage of the economy.

On March 21 at 5 p.m., a presentation was given to the Justice Roundtable of the Dorothy Day House summarizing the work in the past year of concerned citizen in Youngstown uniting as SOBE Concerned Citizens to prevent pyrolysis next to our revitalized downtown. About one year ago, March 30, Thomas Hetrick spoke at the Dorothy Day House about How Youngstown City Zoning Can Keep SOBE from Expanding from a Steam Heating and Cooling business to an industrial concern.

SOBE Concerned Citizens want to keep the community informed about the status of preventing SOBE Thermal Energy’s expansion to industrial operations at 205 North Avenue next to our revitalized downtown area. Many citizens have voiced concerns that the February 14, 2024 issuance of a final air pollution permit by the Ohio EPA to SOBE Thermal Energy allows the business to proceed with its plans.
