The Snake River Plain has been farmed for just over 100 years, and with each generation, the business of farming has become more complex. Each generation, however, has had to wrestle with the same question: How do we preserve the individual farm legacy while preparing the farm for future generations? It was this question that brought 10 potato farmers together in the late ’70s and early ’80s to attempt to operate a fresh-pack potato shed together.

Each year in the U.S., over 1.5 million acres are planted in new alfalfa seedings. If planted at 20 pounds per acre, that’s 30 million pounds of seed needed. Idaho doesn’t have a corner on raising alfalfa seed to satisfy this market, but most of the alfalfa seed grown in Idaho comes from western Idaho.

“We complemented each other well – him with a head for business, finance and management, and me on the production side. Besides, it was a good deal for him,” Kearl laughs, “because he lost half of his debt – to me.” It was the mid-'80s during the farming crisis and at the time, the farm had negative equity. Jentzsch would later remark that he made more money that day by giving away his debt than he ever had farming up to that point.
