Richard E. Sampliner was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1941 as the second son of a suburban general practitioner. He graduated valedictorian from University High School and matriculated to Yale University, where he majored in American Studies and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1963. He attended Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine where he met his future wife, Linda.
