I first encountered Be My AI last fall, when the app was in beta. Developed by Danish mobile app Be My Eyes and OpenAI, it uses ChatGPT-4’s vision model to provide robust, nearly instantaneous descriptions of any image and facilitate conversations about those images. As a blind artist, I collect image descriptions like others collect photographs. Be My AI has supercharged my interactions with visual culture.

This meant I couldn’t read standard-size ink print by the time I was 16. Back in the 1980s, there were no ebooks allowing me to easily change the magnification. There were also very few good books published in large print (they were mostly for older adults).

Almost ten years ago, I was invited to the SoHo studio of artist Roy Nachum. He had me choose colors and paint my portrait on a big piece of paper on the wall.. It basically consisted of long stripes of hair and round sunglasses. I think I chose silver and black. I was wearing gold and black and purple. He took my photo.
