Next Saturday, Oct. 26, Columbia students will face an impossible choice: Halloween or Homecoming. Or both. In a rare cosmic collision, two staple New York City and Columbia traditions will merge into the same chaotic Saturday. Typically celebrated on separate weekends to preserve both our sanities and GPAs, this year’s overlap will force students to juggle costumes, football, and questionable life choices all at once.

Tuna salad, chipotle mayo, pepper jack cheese, red peppers, shredded lettuce, onion, and red vinegar; these are the ingredients that make up “The Abby Hsu,” a new grab-and-go sandwich offered at Chef Mike’s Sub Shop for the first time last Monday. The sandwich is the result of a collaboration between Columbia Dining and the sandwich’s namesake, former Columbia women’s basketball star Abbey Hsu, CC ’24.

The café culture of yesteryear, with its writers, musicians, and poets, seems like a distant memory. The hybrid work structures left over from the COVID-19 pandemic have transformed cafés into places to work from home. I say this not begrudgingly, but instead with curiosity about the establishments that shape us. Today, a good café has free Wi-Fi and leather-wrapped chairs where you can sink in and feel productive for working up the courage to start your senior thesis due this month.

On the walls inside Symposium, there are angels in abstract glory. The ceiling looks like a layout of someone’s record collection. The artist behind the interior design, Yanni Posnakoff, is also the restaurant’s founder. Since 1969, Symposium hasn’t changed much. Chef Dan, the current owner, told me it was important to sustain the original walls and ceilings. Symposium stands as one of the oldest Greek restaurants—if not the oldest—in all of Manhattan.
