I was relaxing in a hammock strung between two palm trees on a white sand beach when I vowed that I would never bother travelling to Bali again. That was almost a year before Bali's governor Wayan Koster announced a list of new rules tourists must follow while visiting the Indonesian hotspot. But I didn't swear off holidaying in Bali because of those restrictions or a bad experience – I did it because I found a spot just as close to Australia that blew it out of the water.
