At NOON, the New York-based literary journal where I have been on staff since 2015, we read all submissions that are under serious consideration together aloud. Compiling each edition is an intimate process—the core team consists of four senior editors helmed by American writer Diane Williams, who founded the journal in 2000. Until the pandemic, our meetings were held around the kitchen table of her Manhattan apartment.

The author manages to examine the complex, uneven power dynamic of such a relationship, weaving it into a surprisingly earnest though never sentimental story of first love. The gorgeous prose drew me in immediately, as did the inviting backdrop of the Australian coast. The unnamed narrator is 24 and on summer holiday with her mother.

But over the past few years I’ve spent teaching fiction and working on my debut novel, Thirst for Salt, I’ve come to feel that the emphasis on authoritative openings and surprising-yet-inevitable endings has obscured that the heart of a narrative lies in what happens in between, in the middle. The middle of the story—like the middle of love—is where complexity and intimacy dwell.
