A SIXTH serious-incident report has been sent to the Charity Commission relating to Bangor Cathedral, a statement on the Church in Wales website said on Tuesday. The “supplementary statement” published on Tuesday follows publication of summaries of the Visitation and safeguarding audit at the cathedral, last Saturday (News, 9 May). THE Minister for Local Government, Jim McMahon, has declined to give any assurance that the Listed Places of Worship Grant (LPWG) Scheme will be made permanent, or that projects already under way will be exempt from the new cap. In a Westminster Hall debate on Tuesday, Mr McMahon said that the limits placed on the scheme were “due to the difficult fiscal circumstances that this Government inherited”.

THE Additional Curates Society (ACS), a charity, founded in 1837, that at one time funded one third of assistant curates, is working with the Charity Commission to reform its governance, after a complaint was made by a whistle-blowing trustee. A dossier submitted to the charity in December 2023 and seen by the Church Times raises a series of concerns about the governance of the charity, including the proper use of its funds, which totalled £6.2 million at the end of 2023.

THE decision by the Archbishop of Wales, the Most Revd Andy John, to appoint the Bangor diocesan secretary as sub-dean of Bangor Cathedral has been implicitly criticised in the Visitation report he commissioned last year (News, 28 February). The report also identifies a number of areas of concern around the working culture at the cathedral, including the personal conduct of certain individuals and management practices “that lacked transparency and vigour”.

CHURCHES hoping to build affordable homes for their communities on pockets of land that they own — or as part of schemes such as rebuilding parish halls — have been invited to apply for grants to pay for expert advice from a £3.2-million fund from the Archbishops’ Council. The fund will run for five years. Grants of up to £25,000 are available towards the cost of an architect, consultant, and other professional fees needed to assess the feasibility of housing proposals on church land.

A PARISH church in the network of Holy Trinity, Brompton (HTB), and situated in one of the most deprived parts of the south-west has been allocated more than £400,000 for mission to children, young people, and families through the Strategic Mission and Ministry Investment Board (SMMIB). St Clement’s, Boscombe, then an Anglo-Catholic church, received a church-plant in 2016 from St Swithun’s, Bournemouth, itself a plant from HTB (Features, 21 April 2017).
