Warning: References to rape and fratricide. Set in the fantasy world of Asunda, this comic is the first issue in a spin-off series of Niobe: She is Life. I’ve been circling around this series for a while, and though it does not focus on Niobe, she is a supporting character in this four-issue story arc. Not being familiar with the world, I did have to read it a couple of times to make sure that I got all the names and relationships straight.

Merry and her nephew Sam travel all the way to Paris only to discover the two French Fauteuils (chairs) she wants to sell are not particularly valuable. No matter what Merry’s arguments, the antique dealer is not swayed; however, on their way out, they are approached by a young man (Aldo Huxley) who tells them another antique dealer – a Monsieur Vautour – might be interested in the chairs. It isn’t until they leave that we, the reader, realizes something nefarious might be going on.

With six solved cases under their belts, they have different opinions on their trajectory: Sam wants to get paid, while Aunt Merry feels solving the mystery is payment enough. Aunt Merry and Sam live in adjoining apartments on the top of an apartment building.

After the defeat of the creature in the last issue, the mermaid discovers that the land dweller Torque knows about the place she’s been searching for: a place where a giant silver trident impales the sun. The mermaid reluctantly asks Torque to show her the way, and, to her surprise, he agrees. It soon becomes apparent they have vastly different perspectives of this harsh wasteland. The mermaid sees nothing but death, but Torque sees beauty and freedom.

When we last left the mermaid and her sidekick Lottie, the axolotl was about to be eaten by a rapacious angler fish with wings/arms. The mermaid is quick to show her claws and attack the beast before Lottie is eaten. But the fight isn’t over yet. Rushing to her H.A.V.C. (Hybrid Aquatic Vehicular Chamber) unit, she almost makes it before the creature is on her again. Finally, eluding the predator, she makes it back inside the unit and flees.

The meeting between the two gives the captain a chance to get the measure of the man, and he finds him to be racist, arrogant, and entitled. It isn’t long before he suspects there’s something more to this than just hunting a tiger.
