Anyone who watched Netflix's The Crown will remember the aging Prime Minister Winston Churchill, played by John Lithgow, reacting violently to a portrait of himself. Churchill was many things—a war hero, a politician, an aristocrat—including an enthusiastic painter and admirer of the arts. In fact, the series even captures Churchill sitting in his garden as he whiles away his troubles painting on a canvas. In his youth, Churchill learned to paint by studying masters such as Claude Monet.

The United States is a relatively new nation in the grand scheme of human history. Built from conquest and settlement, the nation's history is critical to learn in order to build a better present. Many believe the American permanent settlement began with Jamestown or the Pilgrims in Massachusetts. In reality, the popular emphasis on these moments in history has obscured the founding of the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in what is now the United States.

Medieval European life was very different than life today. Thanks to the plague, there was significantly more death, monarchs held absolute sway, and everyone thought the world was flat. However, many things were much the same as today. People loved their pets, wore sentimental jewelry, and roamed many city streets that still exist. Another similarity between modern and medieval times was the critical contribution to the economy and rich social lives of women.

Medieval Europe saw many changes—shifting borders, sweeping epidemics, and cultural diffusion, to name a few. One idea which spread over the period from the fall of Rome onward was the religion of Christianity. The northern reaches of Europe were Christianized by conquest and missions.
